Harbor & Home Interview – PLUS A GIVEAWAY!

Hey friends.

Last week I noticed some posters up around campus advertising a free concert for a band called “Harbor and Home.”  I was super intrigued… They were described as an “Americana, Folk” band… Interesting huh?  I looked them up when I got back to my room and fell in love with their music.  I found them on Twitter and asked them “Hey, any chance I can interview you after the show?” and amazingly they agreed!

I wandered into the venue called “The Blind Munchies.”  It’s this super cool little coffee shop in the basement of a church here in Menomonie.  I love it and know that it’s going to become my go-to place for studying in the winter when I need to grab a cup of cocoa and curl up with my never ending stream of math homework *cries*
.the stage.
Let me just interject here and say that I have the BEST roommate EVER?  She arranged for me to be surprised by

Cristian at the concert! I didn’t even notice him when I walked in because I had no idea where I was going, next thing I know someone offered to take my jacket and hand it up, I turned around and THERE WAS CRISTIAN!  They’re the best.  Ever.

Okay I’m done… Onto the interview. (All answers are from Kaleb unless otherwise noted)

Me: How long have y’all been together?
Harbor & Home: Officially March 2013 – worship leaders together. 5 years of worship. Blue band before hand. – Kaleb

What prompted you to start a band?
I think it was when we heard the band 21 letters play at our church.  After I heard them play I went home and called Kaleb and said we needed to start a band.   – Alex

Where did the name Harbor and Home come from?

We are a band dedicated to the sole purpose of being a light in the darkest times of life. Being the hope and the inspiration that gets us through the most difficult of times. The name, “Harbor and Home” comes from places of refuge and security. Places you can trust and things that you call dear. We believe that our music can be this for anyone who is searching for it. We started out as a band trying to prove to the world that we don’t need to conform to the things we are always told we must do, and that rather we must shape our own paths and choices in life in order to define the people that we are to become. We still believe that this is true and that in order to make the right choices we must surround ourselves with people who build us up and make us stronger. Our music comes from a compilation of stories and events in our lives and in the lives of the people around us. This is our story. (Excerpt taken from online)

I only just started listening up your music when I saw that you were coming to Menomonie and am obsessed. I would say your sound is a perfect blend of NEEDTOBREATHE & The Head & The Heart. Which artists would you say you draw inspiration from?

NEEDTOBREATHE for sure,  and you’re right on with the Head/Heart comparison. When I find an artist I often stick with them and find inspiration from all their work, I don’t jump around to many different artists.  I also love DISNEY.  I loved all the classics like  Aladdin. Lion king. Beauty and the Beast.
Are you sure we aren’t soul mates? There’s a definite possibility that we are soulmates… Just don’t tell Cristian… (He was right next to me at that point, he laughed…)

Y’all are super close by, coming from the Twin cities. Do you go on tour often?

We don’t tour all that much, we’re trying to tour more… We are looking into college tours mainly.

What do you look for when you book a venue?

There’s not really anything we look for specifically other than an opportunity.  We are willing to play a show pretty much anyplace at this point.  Wherever there is a draw, or an interest.

What has been your favorite show you’ve performed? What made it your favorite?

The block party at  UW-Stout. It was a LOT of fun.  The environment, the people etc, had a great atmosphere. Plus the sound system (at this point Alex chimed in “Yeah the sound system!”) It was really nice and professional, they made it really easy for us to just go and perform and have fun.

I love your style, you all have a really cool vibe about you. Where do you draw inspiration for style? What are some stores you frequent?

I figured it out over time, the other guys (in H&H) helped me out because I had awful style.  I was stuck in the 90’s. Also… NEEDTOBREATHE. I draw inspiration from their band members… Especially the hat. I prefer slimmer fitting clothing, it forces me to stay fit.

Your music is slowly gaining popularity, which is great because y’all are awesome. What is your goal with your music as it reaches more fans?
Our goal is for it to be therapeutic. Something that is easy on the ears, easy to enjoy and easy to connect with. That way people can connect, music is a great way to make connections. We want to make this life better. It’s more than just the music… It’s meant to be a home and a harbor, a safe haven.

What do you want your fans to know about your music? What makes it different from every other indie band out there?
Our live show for sure. There’s a lot different energies that keep us going and it’s different than our record. (In a good way!) We’re in it for the long haul, and we want our fans to be too.

I loved that you shamelessly shared how much you love Jesus on stage. Do you get to share your faith often with your fans?
It really depends on the crowd, we don’t want to force it down anyone’s throat… Whenever I share I make sure I feel lead by the Spirit.  Recently there’s been a lot of ample opportunity to share, which is cool.

If you could collaborate with any other artist out there, who would you pick?
NEEDTOBREATHE.

What’s your favorite way to reach out and connect to your fans?
Face to face. I like to be able to interact and talk with them, it’s much more personal than just online.

Favorite memory of being together?
I would say it’s different for everyone in the band. There’s so many memories I can’t pick just one so I would have to say just being together and doing life together. Going through tough things then coming out on top. It’s cool that we share both pain and joy.
And finally, last question I promise… If you could have any super power what would you choose?
Magnetos power from X-Men. He’s super awesome! It’s limited but great… I would like to have a super power but I would want to have a weakness.
